Cette thèse est l’histoire de la rencontre entre deux mondes : d’une part, l’administration du mandat français qui a investi la Syrie après l’effondrement de l’Empire ottoman ; d’autre part, les populations bédouines nomadisant au sein de la steppe syrienne, un espace marginalisé géographiquement et économiquement. Ce travail examine un des projets majeurs du mandat : la sédentarisation des nomades. Par la concession de terres aux chefs de tribus, l’administration française veut transformer les éleveurs bédouins en cultivateurs sédentaires, accroître la surface cultivée et assurer le développement du pays.
